Notebook CPU Availability Improves as Memory and Processor Costs Rise to 68% of System BOM

Notebook CPU availability has improved since the second quarter, reducing production disruption risk. However, CPU, DRAM and SSD now represent 68% of mainstream notebook BOM cost, compared with about 45% in early 2025. OEM and EMS exposure is shifting from allocation risk to the timing of inventory depletion and cost pass-through.

Better CPU supply does not restore notebook cost balance

TrendForce reported on September 4, 2026 that notebook CPU supply had improved materially since the second quarter, allowing brands to normalize procurement and production. The improvement narrowed the projected full-year decline in global notebook shipments to 9.4%. It did not remove the industry's principal constraint because repeated increases in CPU, DRAM and SSD prices have already altered the cost structure of mainstream systems.

For a representative notebook with a $900 first-quarter 2025 retail price, CPU, DRAM and SSD accounted for about 45% of total bill-of-material cost. By the third quarter of 2026, their combined share had risen to 68%, an increase of 23 percentage points. As processor availability improves, the central supply-chain question shifts from obtaining CPUs to absorbing the cost of processors and memory within product margins and retail prices.

A 68% core-component share changes sourcing exposure

The higher weight of core components reduces the value of savings elsewhere in the bill of materials. Negotiating lower prices for enclosures, connectors, passive components or panels cannot fully offset a large movement in DRAM, SSD and CPU costs when those three categories represent more than two-thirds of the system cost base.

TrendForce estimates that a comparable configuration would require an approximately 80% retail-price increase by the third quarter of 2026 to preserve the gross margin available in the first quarter of 2025. That estimate is not a prediction of an equivalent list-price increase. It defines the scale of the margin gap that notebook brands must distribute across pricing, specifications, channel incentives and inventory management.

Advance procurement reshapes the shipment calendar

Improved CPU supply, forward component purchasing and stable commercial demand supported stronger-than-expected first-half shipments. TrendForce expects 2026 notebook volume to be split roughly 53:47 between the first and second halves, reversing the usual reliance on a second-half peak. Some demand originally expected later in the year has already moved forward, and quarterly shipments are still expected to decline from the third quarter.

Forward procurement created a temporary cost buffer as well as additional shipments. Inventory acquired at lower prices can delay the effect of current CPU and memory quotations on retail products. That buffer has a finite duration. As lower-cost stock is consumed, new production batches will carry a larger portion of prevailing DRAM, SSD and CPU costs.

Firm DRAM quotations coexist with weak transactions

September 4 spot data showed DDR4 16Gb 3200 rising 0.63% to an average of $93.500, DDR4 8Gb 3200 increasing 0.96% to $45.000, and DDR5 16Gb 4800/5600 edging up 0.12% to $54.067. The simultaneous increases across several specifications confirm resilient seller quotations.

Transaction activity nevertheless remained cautious. Rising prices with limited buying momentum do not establish broad replenishment demand. For notebook manufacturers, the more important exposure is the persistence of elevated quotations as fresh purchase lots replace inventory acquired before the current cost cycle.

Configuration and pricing provide the next evidence

The next measurable indicators are inventory depletion, DRAM and SSD contract pricing, mainstream memory capacity, storage configuration and new-product retail prices. A rising share of 8GB memory or lower-capacity SSD configurations would indicate specification management. Higher retail prices with stable configurations would indicate more direct cost pass-through.

Improved CPU supply lowers the probability of production stoppages, but it does not restore the economics of the notebook supply chain. With core components at 68% of BOM cost, memory and processors jointly determine margins, configurations and shipment timing. The second-half transition will be defined by how current component costs enter products after lower-cost inventory is depleted.
